Description: This session will focus on discovering and exploring the Habits of Mind, founded by Arthur Costa and Bena Kallick. Their work identifies 16 intelligent behaviors that focuses on how students “produce knowledge” and not just “reproduce it”. The beauty of Habits of Mind is that these are timeless characteristics that have proven successful for people in all facets of life and varied workforce occupations. When asked “what do we have to learn this for?”, we can consider the embedded and invaluable skills that we are implicitly teaching from preK – 12 as defined through the Habits of Mind. We will also explore explicit instruction of the Habits of Mind and how self-awareness may affect student learning.
